Sheki is located in the north-west of the country, on the left bank of the Kish River, 700 meters above sea level, 370 km from the capital Baku, in the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, far from the central regions - in an isolated area. The nature surrounding the city, the mountains covered with forests fascinate people with their beauty. If we approach the city from the north on the steep roads of the Khan plateau, we will come across two large abysses, the Jackal and the Ottal, which are formed by two ravines. Sheki has a strange structure. The Gurjanchay River, which flows from east to west, divides the city into two parts, the higher part is the southern part and the other part is the northern part of the valley.

Places to visit in Sheki

1. Sheki Khan Palace
The palace of Sheki khans - a work of historical art in the city of Sheki (Shaki - Sheki - Sheki), is included in the list of world monuments. Surrounded by castle walls, this two-storey building consists of six rooms, four corridors and two mirrored balconies. Earlier it was called "Divankhana". After the Sheki khanate became part of Russia in 1805, it was also called "Gorodskoy sud" in Russian. It currently operates as a museum.

This building, now known as "Sheki khan's palace", was built by "Mahammadhasan khan divankhanasi", Mahammadhasan khan. Construction of the building began in 1789/1790. The date of its construction is often mistaken for the date of construction of the Shakikhanov House (Mushtaq Emirate - Lead Room). At that time, 32,000 chervons, or 32,000 Iranian tumans, were spent on the construction of the building. The architect is Zeynalabdin from Shiraz. As for the construction of the castle, it was built by the road. The current church in the fortress was the khan's house mosque until 1828, and in the same year it was converted into a church by the Russians in its current form, ie in the form of a cross. The Russians built a prison on the site of the khan's harem. The four large towers at the four corners of the fortress were also built by the Russians for wholesale firing.

2. Round Temple or Nukha Trinity Church

Although opinions about this temple are ambiguous, experts who came here in the 20th century came to the conclusion that the temple was built by the Russians in the 19th century. Another feature that caught my attention here was the graves I came across in the garden of the temple. These graves belong to several high-ranking Russian-Russian officials who died in Nukha. At present, the Sheki Museum of Applied Arts operates inside the temple. After returning from Sheki Khan's palace, you must visit here.

3. Upper Kharvansari

Yukhari Kharvansari, located on Mirza Fatali Akhundov Street, the most beautiful street in Sheki, is one of the two large caravanserais built in the 18th and 19th centuries. This 3-storey caravanserai has an area of 6,000 m2 and more than 300 rooms. The first floor of the caravanserai was designed for merchants to store goods, the second floor for trade, and the third floor for living. The most striking thing about the kharvansari was that it resembled the traditional "riads" in Morocco (houses with an indoor pool and a courtyard).

4. Kish Albanian Temple

According to some sources, the temple in the village of Kish is the first church not only in Caucasian Albania, but in the entire South Caucasus in general. The road to the church passes through the winding streets of the village and is located at one of the highest points of the village. The church is well preserved to this day and was restored in 2000-2001. The most striking nuance in the church is that the bottom of the church is completely filled with Christian tombs. Some of these graves can be seen through wells dug around the church. Currently, it operates as a museum and admission is 2 AZN.

5. Sheki History and Ethnography Museum

Sheki History and Ethnography Museum was established in September 1925. The museum displays more than 5,000 exhibits reflecting the history, culture, ancient arts, ethnography and cuisine of Sheki. About 3,000 of them are displayed in the exhibition halls.

6. BIO Garden

There is a garden called "Bio Garden" in Ovgat village of Sheki. The use of alcohol is prohibited in the garden. Admission of local tourists to this park is 5 AZN, and for foreign tourists - 8 AZN. Tourists can walk through the garden and pick as much fruit from the tree as they want. Those who can't afford it can pay a certain amount.
